National Zoo: Getting Wild in Washington, DC

The wildest of all Smithsonian attractions, the National Zoo is home to more than 1,500 animals across 300 different species. Spanning 163 acres in Washington, D.C.'s Rock Creek Park, the Zoo is home to lions, zebras, Sumatran tigers, cheetahs, bears and the famous giant pandas. Among its many highlights, this world-famous attraction features amazing animal habitats, including Asia Trail, Elephant Trails, Great Cats, Reptile Discovery Center, and the Kids' Farm. Take a ride on the conservation carousel or join a guided tour of the most popular family attractions in Washington, DC.

  • What exhibits are at the zoo?

    The National Zoo features more than 12 animal habitats and exhibits, including Elephant Trails, Great Cats, Small Mammal House, Amazonia, American Trail, Asia Trail (home of the giant pandas), Kids' Farm, Reptile Discovery Center, Cheetah Conservation Center, and the Bird House. Explore this fascinating zoo and meet animals from around the world.
  • Are Zoo Tours offered?

    Yes. The Smithsonian's National Zoo offers a free two-hour guided walking tour of the highlights. You'll see the Zoo's most interesting animals — Asian elephants, golden lion tamarins, cheetahs, tortoises, lions and Andean bears, to name a few. Learn about how the zoo cares for its animals and its conservation programs, and ask trained guides your questions. The Highlights Tour is offered Saturdays and Sundays at 9:45 a.m. For group tours larger than 10 people, call 202-633-3056.
